Haven’t posted in a while.
Anyways recently I purchased an Internet Tablet. I’ve been thinking about it for a while, mainly due to the whole issue around its use. I mean why not buy a Laptop right ? Well I took the plunge and bought an Archos 70 Internet Tablet. It was a bit of a pain trying to find one in the Netherlands, so did a search and found out that a big store in Duesseldorf (Karstadt) had them in stock, went in and picked one up. Had a choice between the 250GB Harddisk Version or the 8GB Flash memory version. Not hard to workout to be honest, after my experience with an iPod 60GB, harddisks are not supposed to be carried around, they will eventually fail due to moving parts.
So updated it to Android 2.2 Froyo, which .. yes is designed for Phones primarily, Gingerbread is not out for a while. I know people are saying it won’t be updated to Gingerbread, but I’m not too bothered to be honest , my Linksys WRT54G I bought back in 2007 is doing the job of a PPTP VPN Server with OpenWRT
hardware is hardware, even if the vendor doesnt carry on support, someone always does.
Its a good piece of Kit.
Pros:
Good Screen – 800×480
Fits in your Coat Pocket
SD Memory card slot – Max 16GB MicroSD so with the Internal Memory thats 24GB.
Wifi
Bluetooth (Enhanced Rate, so it works with Bluetooth headphones etc)
Builtin Kickstand
240 euros
Cons :
Bloody thing doesnt recharge off the Micro USB slot, has a seperate charing port.
Fingerprint Magnet, although all Tablets suffer from this I think.
Froyo 2.2 Image downclocks it to 800mhz
All in all I’m happy with it.
So far my usage has been
eBooks
Some Android games
SSH
Watching TV – Interesting bit (see futher below)
Sat Nav for the car
Music for the car
I setup my Mediaportal System at home ages ago, installed iPimp
In combination with my cheapo Linksys Router, I can now VPN to my home network, wake my computer with a WOL packet from my Linksys Router and the login to iPimp.
iPimp is excellent, basically its an Apache based fronend written for Mediaportal that gives you the ability to watch your Mediacenter when away from Home. Have tested it with 3G and ADSL, works fine, have a 3 Meg uplink at home.
Will be doing some writeups in the coming weeks I think.
I know you could use port forwarding, but I honestly don’t trust Apache or IIS, new exploits pop up all the the time
Plus the VPN Client is builtin to Android now so you can just connect to home at the click of a button.
